Morris Architects embarked on a phased refurbishment project for the existing Maternity Unit at Jersey General Hospital, all while ensuring uninterrupted operations throughout the construction process. The initial works have already delivered a range of new facilities, including a Neo Natal Unit, five state-of-the-art delivery rooms, a High Dependency room, staff changing rooms, and offices.

The existing Maternity department had remained largely untouched for over 25 years, necessitating a comprehensive modernization effort. The goal was to upgrade the delivery suites to provide en-suite facilities and align with contemporary practices for both midwife-led and consultant-led births. Furthermore, the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) required expansion to address infection control concerns, improving bay sizes, and offering enhanced support rooms and storage provisions for parents. Additional enhancements included the implementation of a nurse call system, provision of piped gas supplies, improved temperature control systems, and a complete redecoration of the department.

To ensure continued access to essential services, the refurbishment was meticulously divided into 10 distinct working phases. Throughout the construction period, a minimum of five delivery rooms and twenty patient beds remained fully operational, prioritizing the care and comfort of expectant and new mothers.

While the designs were constrained to fit within the existing 1,400sqm department footprint, an extension within the courtyard area was created to accommodate the expanded SCBU. The introduction of a lighter palette of colours and the incorporation of illuminated ceiling panels in the SCBU area have dramatically transformed the unit into a more serene and calming environment, conducive to patient well-being.

The project was completed in February 2024, culminating in a revitalized and upgraded Maternity Unit that meets the evolving needs of patients and aligns with modern healthcare standards.
